Miss Africa is an African beauty pageant, founded in 2016 by the Government of Cross River State
The current Miss Africa is Sarra Sellimi from Tunisia, crowned on December 30, 2020 at the Paradise City, Cross River State, Nigeria.
Miss Africa is a beauty pageant created by the Government of Cross River State to add value to the annual Christmas Festival/Carnival Calabar. This contest is geared towards promoting the annual theme of the Festival. This pageant are focused on fulfilling its promise of promoting, showcasing and developing Cross River State, as well as Nigeria’s environmental and eco-friendly lifestyle with the amalgamation of beauty, fashion, nature, and charity.
According to the contest organizers, the Pageant Contestants will display true Africanism using their countries indigenous cultural heritage to tell the true stories of their heritage, mineral resources, human capacities, and tourism and investment opportunities in their country and how it will benefit Africa for Africans at large. This edition also aimed at uniting African communities and the leadership of our great Motherland in the battle against hatred, poverty, self-enslavement, xenophobic, corruption and all the issues that make us less human to the rest of the world.
The inaugural final with the theme “Green Economy, a tool for Sustainable Development” took place in Calabar, Cross River State on November 27, 2016.Angola’s representative at the maiden edition of Miss Africa Calabar 2016 Neurite Mendes emerged as the first ever winner. She becomes the first Miss Africa Climate Change ambassador.
The competition is open to young women aged 18 to 27 with a minimum height of 5 feet 7 inches.
Miss Africa features directors in African countries, who elects a delegate for this contest.Each year, about thirty candidates are fighting to win the crown.
The contestants were camped for three weeks where they were mentored, drilled and taught how to speak, walk and behave respectively, becoming a voice and face of positive change across communities. The grand finale saw the Miss Africa Queen crowned.They are evaluated according to several criteria : – Swimsuit Parade – Traditional Outfits Parade – Evening Gown Parade
